How to Uncover Your Unique Personal Style January 31, 2020 – Posted in: Blog
Do you ever look at fashion icons like Cara Delevigne, Beyonce, or even Cher and feel jealous of their personal style? People like this seem to have their own innate style barometer, being able to effortlessly put together chic and unique outfits that are unlike anything anyone else is wearing, and express their individuality.
However, this incredible personal style is not reserved for supermodels and stars. Anyone can uncover their own unique style and learn how to express it, with a little introspection and exploration.
Step #1: Think About What Makes You Unique
Your personal style journey starts with you. So the first thing you need to do is look inward. Think about what makes you unique: are you someone who likes the finer things in life, or are you just as happy with the simple things? Do you love expressing yourself to others, or are you more introspective and inwardly-focused? Do you like traditional, classic things, or are you more drawn to innovative, creative and different things?
All of these things are what makes you who you are, and should be reflected in your personal style. Sit down and make a list of 10 to 20 words that define who you are as a person. Also keep in mind that unique doesn’t have to be dramatic: the thing that defines you and your style could be something subtle like simplicity or being easy and relaxed.
Step #2: Find Style Icons You Love
Once you have your list of key attributes in mind, it is time to look outward and find some inspiration. Start by looking into different style icons and determine which ones have a style that resonates with you. You can look at contemporary icons, or research into legendary style icons of the past like Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Marilyn Munroe.
When you’ve chosen a few or more people whose style you love, dig deeper. Look at what it is about their style that you love. Is it their creativity? Their timeless elegance? The fact they don’t care about what anyone else thinks? Drawing inspiration from someone you admire is not about copying them, but rather taking the essence of what you love about them.

Step #3: Look For Eras that Inspire You
While you’re looking for inspiration, have a look at the different eras of fashion. History is packed with different fashion and style eras, each with their own unique elements to inspire. The psychedelic prints of the the 1960’s and 1970’s, the fringed dresses of the 1920’s, the classic Dior silhouette and more: there is so much to inspire. Again, it is more important to draw the feeling and the vibe that you love about a particular era, rather than copying specific outfits or pieces of clothing.
Step #4: Explore Other Cultures
You also don’t need to limit your inspiration to Western cultures. The world is full of amazing and diverse cultures with their own point of view. This point of view is accompanied by amazing different styles of dress and accessories. Introducing some unique fashion pieces from other cultures that you love and that touch you in some way can be a fun and different way to express your own sense of style. As with the points above, you can also take the essence rather than concrete pieces from a particular culture.
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Pull inspiration from the intricate beading and embroidery of Indian Saris
- Take from the amazing textiles of Mexico and Central America, rooted in Aztec and Incan traditions
- Look at the jewellery and accessories of the nomadic tribes of North Africa and the Middle East, such as the Bedouin
Step #5: Express Your Personal Style
Now you have a clear picture of your own unique personal style attributes, it’s time to express it! Start by buying a few key pieces that reflect the feelings, eras, icons and cultures that you love. From there you can expand out from these pieces until your entire wardrobe expresses who you are aand your point of view.
Your unique personal style should shine through in everything that you wear: there is no need to be traditional when it comes to certain items. You can be unique and creative, expressing your personal style even with pieces that people generally feel they need to fit a certain expectation, such as their engagement rings. You can, however, find unique engagement rings that express your own sense of style, especially those that you can design yourself.
