Who wouldn’t want to take a moment to admire how stunning Aishwarya Rai is? Since she won the title of Miss World in 1994, Aishwarya has ruled the world. The following year, she may have handed the torch to someone else, but the world still adores the diva that she is.
Mani Ratnam released the character poster for Ash from Ponniyin Selvan, and the actress undoubtedly looks every bit the queen that she is. Aishwarya portrays Nandini, the Queen of Pazhuvoor, and the Chola age served as an influence on every aspect of her appearance. Although she looks stunning in the copper-coloured saree, we must admit that her jewellery is the most striking.
Aishwarya’s looks in both the posters seem pretty different. That might be because she plays a dual role in the film! She plays a queen called Nandini, as well as Mandakini Devi, Nandini’s deaf and mute mother.
More interestingly, in the story, Nandini is an antagonist. In the original novel, this story is based, on Nandini has a bad childhood and is ill-treated by royals. So, to get revenge on them, she allies with their enemies to defeat them.
This means we will finally get to see Aishwarya play a villain unless you count Khakee. Plus, we will see her collaborate with the legendary director Mani Ratnam, who directed Aishwarya in her first movie, Iruvar, and then in films like Guru and Raavan.
Aishwarya looked stunning in custom silk and traditional jewellery. The actress’s hair was done in a middle-parted touseled manner, and she could be seen facing away from the camera. A medium-sized crimson bindi, a maang-tika, and a statement nose pin were all displayed on Aishwarya’s forehead. After eagerly anticipating her on-screen debut, the actress’s fans couldn’t stop gushing over her grace and soul online.

Did you know that 18 artisans worked for six months to create the jewellery that Aishwarya Rai wore for Ponniyin Selvan? These are the specifics.
It took 18 talented craftsmen to turn into reality the designs of three gifted designers who were assigned the task of designing jewellery for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s character Nandini, the Queen of Pazhuvoor, in director Mani Ratnam’s much-awaited magnum opus, ‘Ponniyin Selvan’.
Only recently, the unit of the film chose to release the first look of Queen Nandini, played by Aishwarya Rai in the film.
The jewellery sported by the character Nandini in the film is handcrafted and has been recreated to give audiences the impression that they were from the Chola era.
The jewellery, designed by Kishandas and Co of Hyderabad, involved three artisans/jewellery designers while the making took around six months for the total process from inspiration, to studying history, to character specification and had 18 craftsmen working on it.
What Nandini is wearing consists of authentic art forms which include necklaces made in traditional Kundan setting and a wide range of accessories including vanki, rings and jhumkas set in uncut and precious gems including emeralds, rubies and yellow sapphires.
“It is a dream collaboration to translate legendary filmmaker Mani Ratnam sir’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan‘ vision, and a great canvas to showcase our craftsmanship and exquisite detail to handcrafting traditional Indian jewellery,” says Pratiksha Prashant, spokesperson of Kishandas and Co.
